Cloud-based learning and simulation are driving cost efficiency – by Clive Battisby

22 March 2021

Clive Battisby, head of simulation for Drilling Systems’ parent company, 3t Energy Group, talks about the significant cost-savings driven by the licensing model of cloud-based simulators.

iDrillSIM blog series

In this mini-series of blogs, head of simulation for 3t Energy Group, Clive Battisby talks about the rapid uptake of cloud-based simulators for in-house and commercial training organisations around the world.

Drilling Systems’ iSimulator range, which includes the popular iDrillSIM cloud-based drilling and well control simulator, has been one of training and competencies successes of the last 12 months. With both IADC and IWCF approval it quickly passed 12,000 hours of completed simulation.

Talking about how licensing models for iSimulators ae helping in-house and commercial training providers reduce costs and increase margins in a tough economic climate, Clive said:

“Firstly, we should acknowledge that this is a really tough economic position for all businesses. We designed the iSimulators range efficiently using the same software platform as our full-sized simulators and this in turn has enabled us to keep costs lower than maybe our competitors have.

“As part of our development process, we talked to some of the industry’s biggest names which led to a unique licensing model that really helps training divisions to reduce their costs. In short, we have devised a model that creates a license for the seat and not for the person. So you can run multiple classes with multiple delegates all from the same license as long as they take place at different times of day.

This model has driven the rapid uptake in iDrillSIM licenses, which are also available to buy entirely online and via a credit card. In less than 12 months the iDrillSIM has racked up more than 12,000 hours of training and this is growing rapidly.”

When asked about overhead reductions from cloud-based learning, Clive said:

“We are delighted by the response from industry and count BP, Shell and Chevon amongst our userbase. These are difficult times and being able to deliver something rapidly that is supporting our customers and enabling them to meet critical safety standards is extremely rewarding.

“Remember you can complete purchases for our cloud-based learning simulators entirely online* via our website. Click ‘buy now’ on the product page, follow the link, select the type of software license you would like and complete credit card details. If you would like to complete an order with alternative payment methods such as invoicing you can do this by emailing our sales team.”

*iDrillSIM licenses are available to buy online now, with licenses for the other products in our iSimulator range to be available online shortly.
